How this Percentage Calculator Works

This tool calculates your HSLC (Class 10) or AHSEC (Class 12) percentage using the standard formula adopted by the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) and the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC). From 2024 onwards both boards function under the new Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB), but the HSLC and Higher Secondary examination streams and their percentage / division rules continue as before.

  1. Pick HSLC for Class 10 or AHSEC for Class 12 using the toggle. This sets sensible default subjects and the matching division cut-offs.
  2. For each row, enter the marks obtained and the maximum marks for that subject (usually 100).
  3. Click Add Subject to add more rows; use the × button to remove a row.
  4. Optional: turn on Best N if your college / university uses a Best N rule (most commonly Best 4 of 5 for AHSEC admissions).
  5. Click Calculate. Your total, percentage and division appear — in both English and Assamese numerals.

Percentage Formula

Percentage = (Total Marks Obtained ÷ Total Maximum Marks) × 100

Example: HSLC marks 78 + 82 + 65 + 90 + 71 + 88 = 474 out of 600. Percentage = (474 ÷ 600) × 100 = 79.00% — First Division with Distinction.

HSLC (Class 10) Division Cut-offs

The following classification is the one historically used by SEBA for the HSLC result. It is now carried forward under ASSEB. Always verify against your official marksheet for the exact applicable rule.

About the "Best N" Mode

Many universities and colleges in Assam and across India compute an applicant percentage using only the best N subjects from your AHSEC marksheet — most commonly Best 4 of 5. The exact rule depends on the institution and the course you apply to. Enable the Best N toggle above the table to compute this. How this calculator picks the "best" subjects: rows are ranked by their per-subject percentage (marks ÷ max), and the top N are kept in the total. This is the fair approach when maximum marks differ between subjects. Some institutions may instead pick subjects by raw marks, or may require a specific subject (e.g. English) to always be included — please follow whichever rule your college's official admission notification specifies.

⚠ The Best N rule and which subjects qualify (for example, whether English is compulsory in the best N) is set by each university or college. Always check the official admission notification of the institution you are applying to before relying on a Best N percentage.

Worked Examples

Example 1 — AHSEC Best 4 of 5 (all subjects out of 100)
SubjectMarksMax%In Best 4?
English7210072.00%
MIL (Assamese)8510085.00%
Political Science7810078.00%
Economics8110081.00%
History5410054.00%— dropped
  • All 5 subjects: (72 + 85 + 78 + 81 + 54) ÷ 500 × 100 = 74.00%
  • Best 4 of 5: (72 + 85 + 78 + 81) ÷ 400 × 100 = 79.00% → First Division

The lowest-percentage subject (History, 54%) is dropped. The remaining four are summed and divided by their combined max (400).

Example 2 — Best N with mixed max marks (theory + practical)
SubjectMarksMax%In Best 3?
English7610076.00%
Chemistry (Practical)273090.00%
Physics6210062.00%
Mathematics4510045.00%— dropped
  • Ranking is by per-subject %, not by raw marks. That is why Chemistry Practical (27 marks) is ranked above Mathematics (45 marks) — its denominator is smaller.
  • Best 3: (76 + 27 + 62) ÷ (100 + 30 + 100) × 100 = 165 ÷ 230 × 100 = 71.74% → First Division

When max marks differ between subjects, ranking by percentage (rather than raw marks) gives the higher and fairer result — but always confirm whether your institution uses this method or a raw-marks method.

Example 3 — When Best N gives the same answer as the full total

If every subject is out of the same maximum (say 100) and you set N equal to the total number of subjects, Best N gives the identical result to using all subjects. Best N only changes the result when N is smaller than the number of subjects and at least one subject has a lower percentage than the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my HSLC or AHSEC percentage?

Percentage = (Total Marks Obtained ÷ Total Maximum Marks) × 100. Add up the marks you scored, divide by the sum of the maximum marks for those subjects, and multiply by 100. This calculator does the math for any number of subjects and any maximum-marks value.

What are the HSLC (Class 10) division cut-offs?

Long-standing SEBA classification: 75%+ Distinction / First Division with Star, 60–74.99% First Division, 45–59.99% Second Division, 30–44.99% Third Division, below 30% not qualified. Always verify with your official marksheet — the board can revise these.

What are the AHSEC (Class 12) division cut-offs?

Long-standing AHSEC classification: 60%+ First Division, 45–59.99% Second Division, 33–44.99% Third Division, below 33% not qualified. Pass marks per subject and exact rules are set by the board — refer to your AHSEC marksheet for the current rule.

What is "Best 4 of 5" for AHSEC admissions?

Many universities and colleges accept an applicant percentage computed from the best N (typically Best 4 of 5) subjects of your AHSEC marksheet, instead of all subjects. The exact rule depends on the institution. Note on this calculator's method: when you enable Best N, this tool ranks subjects by their per-subject percentage (marks÷max) and keeps the top N — this is the fair approach when maximum marks differ between subjects. Some admission rules instead aggregate raw marks of specific compulsory subjects (e.g. English must be included). Always confirm the exact rule from your college's official admission notification before relying on a Best N result.

Have SEBA and AHSEC merged?

Yes. In 2024 the Government of Assam constituted ASSEB — the Assam State School Education Board — which subsumes the functions of SEBA and AHSEC. The HSLC and Higher Secondary examination streams and the percentage / division rules continue as before. Cross-check the latest notification on the ASSEB website.

Are my marks stored anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser. Your data never leaves your device — no servers, no logs, no tracking.
